Ideal for the transportation of bulk goods and personal stuff and international movings. Nice to know: 1 TEU is equivalent to 1 20 feet long container.
- This box is a very suitable choice for the shipment of goods in ocean freight.
- The size of a 20-foot container is: L – 5.89M. W – 2.35M. H – 2.23M.
- Usually, 9-11 pallets are able to fit in one TEU.
- A lot can be loaded in terms of goods weight: +/- 27.500 kg.

When is a FCL container a good choice?
If your goods don’t fit in a small (shared) container, then a full container is often worth it. Freight forwarders then refer to it as FCL (Full Container Load). All cargo space is used exclusively for you. This has multiple advantages: optimal transit time, less potential for damage and and it is cheaper per unit. There are of course also drawbacks: it is not efficient for small cargo types and less convenient delivery options. There are also other departure ports. See for example Rotterdam to Keelung (TWKEL) or Hamburg to Keelung (TWKEL).
- FCL means that your goods are stored in a fully owned container.
- Ideal for bulk items and large-volume products.
- Economically viable when the shipment occupies 15 m3 or more.
- Available at: e.g. Hapag-Lloyd, Maersk, ONE, CMA CGM, COSCO.
LCL: Less than container
If your cargo does not fill an entire 20-foot or 40-foot container, inquire about the possibilities for a shared container. This is known as LCL (Less Than Container Load). LCL means that you share the container with other importers. The advantages of this option include: it’s perfect for shipping small loads, less inventory costs & management and easy time-management and scheduling. Remark: if your shipment takes up more than half a container, then FCL is probably your best bet. The total shipping costs are related to the volume in m3 and the weight of the freight.
- With LCL transport, you reserve space in a partial container.
- Ideal for transport volumes between 2 m3 and 13,5 m3.
- Cost-effective for freight forwarders with smaller shipment volumes.
- There is always sufficient availability (every season).
- Available at: e.g. Evergreen, ZIM, Wan Hai, Yang Ming, POL.
