In which situations do I choose an FCL container?
If your goods don’t fit in a small (shared) container, then you better book an exclusive private full container. Freight carriers then talk about FCL (Full Container Load). There is no need to share it with other shippers. The benefits are great: ideal transit time, limited chance of damage and and it costs less at the bottom of the line. There are also disadvantages: it is unsuitable for small goods exporters and insurance is extra important. Sending the sea freight from another port? (LCL) Less than container
If you do not need a full container, it is often a good idea to pick a shared container. You choose a LCL (Less Than Container Load) contract. LCL means that you pay per m3 or per metric ton for space inside a complete container. There are many positive aspects to mention like: it’s perfect for shipping small loads, you spend less on inventory space and it is faster during peak-season. Notable: if you have a cargo load that is more than half a container unit, then it is usually more interesting to opt for FCL. The shipping rates are based on volume and weight.
- The idea of LCL is that your cargo is shipped in a partial container.
- Ideal for transport volumes between 1,5 m3 & 15,5 m3.
- You only pay for the space you are using.
