What is a Full Container (FCL)?
If your cargo is so large that you can fill an entire container, then you can book your own full container. Freight forwarders then refer to it as FCL (Full Container Load). You don’t need to share your container with anyone else. This has multiple advantages: efficient transit time, less risk of damage during the logistics process and and it costs less at the bottom of the line. You have to pay attention to a few things: it is not suitable for small cargo and it is harder to unload the FCL shipment. There are also other departure ports. See for example Antwerp to Samsun (TRSSX) or Hamburg to Samsun (TRSSX).
- The idea of FCL is that one single container is booked exclusively for the transportation of cargo.
- Load directly from factory or storage.
- Economically viable when the shipment occupies 15 m3 or more.
- Available at: e.g. COSCO, MSC, CMA CGM, Hapag-Lloyd, Maersk.
When do i need a Less than container Load (LCL)?
If you want to transport a small cargo by sea, your goods will be shipped with other cargo. Logistics experts treat that as a LCL (Less Than Container Load) agreement. LCL means that you share the container with other importers. The advantages of this option include: you pay only for the volume you need, you spend less on inventory warehousing space and lower sourcing risk. Disclaimer: once you have more than half a container worth of goods, it is often cheaper to book a full container. The shipping rates are based on the volume in m3 and the weight of the freight.
- The idea of LCL is that you make use of a partial container for the transportation.
- A suitable choice for transport with a size between 1,5 m3 – 14 m3.
- Deal for cargo that does not fill the entire container.
- Can be booked via practical all shipping lines.
- Available at: e.g. ZIM, POL, Wan Hai, HMM, Evergreen.
